Men’s Tennis Tops Lehigh, 5-2, On Sunday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Saint Francis men's tennis team earned a 5-2 win at Lehigh on Sunday.  The Red Flash won the doubles point and won four of the six singles matches.  SFU improved to 7-3 this Spring, while Lehigh dropped to 2-6.
 
"This is a solid win for our guys," said Head Coach Rob Castille. "Lehigh is always a tough team and I'm proud of the way the men stepped up today."
 
In the match at the top doubles position, junior Alec Dylan Foo-Kune (Phoenix, Mauritius/International Connections Academy (Md.)) and senior Rodrigo Tico (Guadalajara, Mexico/Colegio de Bachilleres) competed against Lehigh's George Cooper and Dylan Karchere-Sun.  The Red Flash duo picked up a 6-4 victory to improve to 7-3 in dual matches.
 
At No. 3, senior Plamen Avuski (Plovdiv, Bulgaria /Math High School ) and freshman Arturo Dell'eva (Verona, Italy/Sanchez Casal Tennis Academy) paired up against the Mountain Hawks' Ethan Bogard and Colin Nardella.  The SFU pair earned a 6-1 win and is now 1-1 this Spring.
 
Freshman Franz Luna (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Laurel Springs) and sophomore Jan Vit Suntar (Cerklje na Gorenjskem, Slovenia/Gimnazija Kranj) met Lehigh's Graham Lehman and Jack Petersen at No. 2.  Luna and Suntar were trailing 6-5 when the match was stopped after the Red Flash clinched the doubles point.
 
"Winning the doubles point was huge and we carried that momentum into singles," said Castille. "Our top three did a great job of making sure we didn't let Lehigh into the match. We'll take a lot of good things away from this match and look to keep things rolling."
 
Foo-Kune battled LU's Cooper in the match at No. 1 singles.  The Red Flash junior came out on top, 7-5, in a tight opening set.  Foo-Kune dominated the second set, winning 6-0, for the straight-set victory.  He improved 6-4 this Spring.
 
At No. 2, Luna faced Lehigh's Petersen.  The SFU rookie claimed the first set, 6-4.  He bettered that performance in the second set to win 6-1.  Lune is now 8-2 in dual matches.
 
Dell'eva met the Mountain Hawks' Karchere-Sun at No. 3.  The Red Flash freshman took the first set, 6-2.  He clinched a straight-set victory with a 6-3 win in the next set.  Dell'eva moved to 5-1 this Spring.
 
In the match at No. 5, Avuski took on Lehigh's Jack Martin-Dyer.  The Saint Francis senior won the opening frame, 6-2.  In a tough second set, Avuski came out on top, 7-5.  Avuski improved to 6-2 in dual matches.
 
Tico competed against LU's Nardella at No. 4.  The Red Flash senior dropped a 6-4, 6-3 result.  Tico is now 5-5 this Spring.
 
At No. 6, senior Eli Cerdan (Bloomfield, N.J. /Saint Mary High School) faced the Mountain Hawks' Bogard.  In the first set, Cerdan fell 6-4, but he bounced back to win the second set, 7-5.  In the deciding super-tiebreaker set, Cerdan lost 10-6.  Cerdan is 4-2 this Spring.
 
The Red Flash returns to action on Saturday, March 11 against St. Bonaventure.

3. Dell'eva(SFU) def. Karchere-Sun(Lehigh), 6-2, 6-3.
4. Nardella(Lehigh) def. Tico(SFU), 6-4, 6-3.
5. Avuski(SFU) def. Martin-Dyer(Lehigh), 6-2, 7-5.
6. Bogard(Lehigh) def. Cerdan(SFU), 6-4, 5-7, 10-6.
