BOX SCORE Waco, Texas - The Saint Francis softball team (10-5) erased a 4-0 deficit to win its final game of the Baylor Invite 5-4 over UMass (2-8) thanks to a walk-off single by sophomore
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois).
Jennifer Patrick-Swift's Reaction
"It was good to be able to bounce back and get a win today," said head coach
Jennifer Patrick-Swift. "The team rallied together and fought hard in the final innings to get the win."
Saint Francis fell in an early hole in the third inning as UMass loaded the bases on three hits, two of them via the bunt. Kaitlyn Stavinoha busted the inning open with a grand slam to right field.
The Red Flash were held without a hit until the fifth inning. Junior
Madison Cabell (Ivor, Va./Southampton)Â and senior
Kindra Witthus (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) worked one-out walks and were moved over on a ground out by freshman
Meg Murzello (Maple Shade, N.J./Holy Cross). Sophomore
Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) delivered SFU's first hit on a grounder in the hole to score a run. Junior
Jordan Seneca (Plum, Pa./Plum) waited on a change-up in the next at bat and drove it up the middle to tack on another run.
Freshman
Abby Trahan (Kaplan, La./Kaplan) kept the UMass offense at bay, throwing 4.1 scoreless innings in relief to give the Red Flash a chance heading into the seventh inning. Trahan allowed just one hit and one walk for the game.
Witthus sparked Saint Francis's winning rally with a leadoff double to the gap in left center to lead off the seventh.
Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) was hit by a pitch with one out to put two on for Seneca who lined a pitch into right field to cut the deficit to 4-3. McKee went to third on the play and Seneca advanced to second on the throw thanks to some heads-up baserunning.Â
Sophomore
Hayley Norton (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) tied the game a batter later with a line shot to left. The ball hung up for the left fielder to make the catch but it was plenty deep for McKee to tag and score from third.
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) ended the game in the next at-bat, bouncing one through the left side of the infield. Seneca beat the throw home and the Red Flash celebrated the victory.
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) ended up as the lone representative on the All-Tournament Team, finishing the week 5-for-15 (.333) with three doubles, a home run and six rbi.
