Men’s Tennis Knocks Off St. Bonaventure, 6-1

OLEAN, N.Y. – The Saint Francis Men's Tennis team earned a 6-1 win at St. Bonaventure on Saturday.  The Red Flash swept the doubles matches and won five of six singles contests.  The Red Flash improved to 8-3 this Spring, while St. Bonaventure is now 6-9.
 
"This was a good win for us," said Head Coach Rob Castille. "St. Bonaventure is always a well-coached team that fights hard."
 
At the top doubles spot, senior Alec Dylan Foo-Kune (Phoenix, Mauritius/International Connections Academy (Md.)) and freshman Franz Luna (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Laurel Springs) matched up against the Bonnies' Victor Blanco and Hector Martinez.  The Red Flash duo earned a 6-3 win to improve to 2-3 overall.
 
Freshman Arturo Dell'eva (Verona, Italy/Sanchez Casal Tennis Academy) and sophomore Jan Vit Suntar (Cerklje na Gorenjskem, Slovenia/Gimnazija Kranj) combined at No. 2 against St. Bonaventure's Lukas Linden Malmberg and Indra Patwardhan.  The SFU pair came out on top in a tight 7-5 set.  Dell'eva and Suntar are 2-2 this Spring.
 
In the match at No. 3, seniors Plamen Avuski (Plovdiv, Bulgaria /Math High School ) and Eli Cerdan (Bloomfield, N.J. /Saint Mary High School) met SBU's Guillermo Garcia and John Kutkowski.  The Saint Francis duo won 6-1 to improve to 5-0 in dual matches.
 
"Our guys came out in doubles and played with great focus and energy," said Castille. "We carried that momentum into singles and were able to take five of the six matches. I like where we are as a team right now. We still ave many things we need to improve upon, but at this point in the season, I like our mentality."
 
Foo-Kune took on St. Bonaventure's Blanco at the top singles spot.  The SFU senior claimed the first set, 6-4.  He completed the sweep by winning the next set, 6-2.  Foo-Kune is now 7-4 this Spring.
 
Luna faced SBU's Martinez at No. 2.  The Red Flash rookie won the opening frame, 6-2.  He repeated that performance in the second set to earn the straight-set victory.  Luna moved to 9-2 this Spring.
 
At No. 3, Dell'eva competed against the Bonnies' Patwardhan.  The SFU freshman took the first set, 6-1, but Patwardhan responded by winning the next set, 6-3.  In the deciding set, Dell'eva came out on top, 6-1.  He is now 6-1 in dual matches.
 
Avuski met SBU's Garcia at No. 4.  The Saint Francis senior claimed the opening set, 6-3.  He completed the sweep with a 6-2 win in the second set.  Avuski is now 7-2 this Spring.
 
Suntar matched up against St. Bonaventure's Rutkowski at No. 6.  The SFU sophomore won the first set, 6-2.  He then won a tough second set, 7-5, to improve to 8-1 this Spring.
 
Cerdan competed against SBU's Malmberg at No. 5.  The SFU senior fell 6-3 in the first set, but bounced back to win the second set, 6-1.  In the deciding super-tiebreaker set, Malmberg won 10-4.  Cerdan is now 4-3 in dual matches.
 
The Red Flash continues its Spring schedule next weekend as it hosts Niagara on Friday, March 17 at 10 a.m. at the Greensburg Racquet Club.  SFU then welcomes Mount St. Mary's to The Club Sport and Health in Monroeville on Sunday, March 19 for a 1 p.m. match.
