LORETTO, Pa. – The Saint Francis Men's Tennis team begins play at the NEC Championships on Friday at the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, N.J. The Red Flash, the No. 2 seed, meets St. Francis Brooklyn, the No. 7 seed, in Friday's Quarterfinals match, which begins at approximately 11:30 a.m.
The Red Flash, led by Head Coach
Rob Castille, is 13-4 overall and finished the regular season with a 4-0 mark in NEC play. Saint Francis earned its highest seed in program history to start the NEC Tournament. SFU reached the NEC Championship Match last year, for the first time in program history, and will look to win its first NEC Title this year.
Freshman
Franz Luna (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Laurel Springs) leads the Red Flash with 13 wins this Spring. He has a 13-3 mark at No. 2 singles.
Senior
Plamen Avuski (Plovdiv, Bulgaria /Math High School ) and sophomore
Jan Vit Suntar (Cerklje na Gorenjskem, Slovenia/Gimnazija Kranj) each have 12 dual-match victories this year. Avuski is 12-3, while playing at No. 3, 4 and 5. Suntar is also 12-3, lining up at No. 4, 5 and 6.
Junior
Alec Dylan Foo-Kune (Phoenix, Mauritius/International Connections Academy (Md.)) is 11-6 this Spring at the No. 1 position. Freshman
Arturo Dell'eva (Verona, Italy/Sanchez Casal Tennis Academy) is 10-2, playing at No. 2, 3 and 4, while senior
Eli Cerdan (Bloomfield, N.J. /Saint Mary High School) is 10-3 at No. 5 and 6. Senior
Rodrigo Tico (Guadalajara, Mexico/Colegio de Bachilleres) is 6-6 this season, playing his matches at No. 3 and 4.
Foo-Kune has combined with Luna for a 4-1 record and Tico for a 7-5 mark at No. 1 doubles. Dell'eva and Suntar have paired up for a 7-3 record at No. 2, while Avuski and Cerdan are 9-2 at No. 3.
Saint Francis earned a 7-0 win over St. Francis Brooklyn on February 12. The Red Flash swept the singles and doubles action without dropping a set.
The Terriers are 5-11 overall and finished with an 0-3 NEC record in the regular season. Last weekend, St. Francis Brooklyn fell 6-1 at UConn. Sophomore Guillermo Artiz has three wins at No. 1 singles, while sophomore Alejandro Ridruejo is 5-2 at No. 2. Artiz and Ridruejo are 5-7 at No. 1 doubles.
The winner of the Saint Francis-St. Francis Brooklyn match will meet the winner of the match between No. 3 Wagner and No. 6 Sacred Heart in Saturday's NEC Semifinals.
