SFU fights back for 2-2 draw at UMBC

BOX SCORE Baltimore, Md. - Sophomore forward Alyssa McGhee (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) continued her strong season with a goal and junior Sara Suler (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) tacked on another 52 seconds later to help the Saint Francis women's soccer team (2-5-1) earn a 2-2 draw at UMBC Thursday night despite trailing 2-0 after 12 minutes.

Highlights
  • The Retrievers got off to a fast start with a goal in the second minute when a shot from distance dipped under the bar and out of sophomore goalkeeper Julia Hernan (Collegeville, Pa./The Hill School)'s reach.
  • UMBC went ahead 2-0 in the 12th minute when Olivia Bronson converted a rebound opportunity on a scramble in front of goal.
  • From that point on it was all Red Flash. Alyssa McGhee (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) started the comeback with her third goal of the season in the 29th minute.
  • Suler struck for her first tally of the year in the following minute, converting a pass from senior Gabi Morales (Madrid, Spain/Colegio La Inmaculada-Marillac).
  • The Red Flash continued to pressure in the second half. Senior Gabi Morales (Madrid, Spain/Colegio La Inmaculada-Marillac) had a great look in the 66th minute, holding off her defender, turning, and curling a left-footed effort towards the back post that was kept out with a fingertip save.
  • Morales was in the center of the action again in the first overtime, picking out freshman Camryn Tirado (Deptford, N.J./Deptford) with a cross. Tirado controlled the cross and made a move towards goal before being brought down just before she could get off a shot.
  • McGhee had the best chance for either team in the overtime periods, nearly winning the match for Saint Francis in the 108th minute. Her speed allowed her to turn the corner and walk in on goal but her shot was saved from in close.
Notes
  • The Red Flash got stronger as the game wore on, finishing with a 26-15 advantage in shots and 12-4 advantage in shots on goal. Shots were 13-11 in favor of Saint Francis at the half. The Red Flash recorded 13 shots to just four for UMBC over the final 65 minutes.
  • Saint Francis also compiled an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.
  • McGhee and Morales were the driving forces of the attack. McGhee finished with eight shots and three shots on goal while Morales totalled six shots and three shots on target.
  • Seniors Allison LaDuke (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) and Siobhan Bross (Danville, Pa./Danville Area), junior Shannon McGinnis (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus), McGhee and freshman Aubrey Suydam (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) played the entire 110 minutes.
  • Saint Francis moves to 2-0-1 when scoring at least two goals.
