BOX SCORE Flash Points:
  • SFU Men's Tennis dropped a tough 4-3 result at Lehigh on Sunday.
  • After giving up the doubles point, the Red Flash won the top three singles matches.
  • The Red Flash is now 0-4 this season and will meet Carnegie Mellon and Dayton next weekend.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Saint Francis Men's Tennis team dropped a tough 4-3 decision at Lehigh on Sunday.  The Red Flash dropped the doubles point, but won at the top three singles positions before Lehigh pulled out the victories with a singles win at No. 6.  Saint Francis fell to 0-4 this season, while Lehigh improved to 1-1.

"This was a well-fought match and it's disappointing to come up just short," said Head Coach Rob Castille. "I felt we had chances in doubles and we really need to convert the opportunities that we are getting. That turned out to be the difference in the match."

At the No. 2 doubles position, sophomore Franz Luna (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Laurel Springs) and freshman Sebastian Pinos (Quito, Ecuador/Compuinformatica) took on Lehigh's Christopher Auteri and Harry Wang.  The Red Flash duo earned a 6-4 win to improve to 4-4 on the year.

Senior Alec Dylan Foo-Kune (Phoenix, Mauritius/International Connections Academy (Md.)) and sophomore Eduardo Garcia (Toluca, Mexico/Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Mexico) competed against the Mountain Hawks' Jacob Edelchik and Jack Martin-Dyer.  The SFU pair fell 6-4 in its first match of the season.

Junior Chad Allender (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area) and sophomore Samuel Miller (Smithfield, R.I./Homeschool) met LU's Bryant Born and Jack Petersen at No. 3.  Allender and Miller fell 6-3.

Luna battled the Mountain Hawks' Martin-Dyer at the top singles spot.  The SFU sophomore claimed the first set, 6-2.  He completed the straight-set victory with a 6-1 win in the second set.  Luna improved to 3-1 this Spring.

Foo-Kune matched up at No. 2 against Lehigh's Jack Petersen.  The Red Flash senior earned a tough 7-6 win in the opening set, with a 7-4 win in the tiebreaker.  Foo-Kune clinched the sweep with a 6-3 victory in the next set.  Foo-Kune moved to 2-2 this season.

At No. 3, Pinos took on LU's George Cooper.  The Red Flash rookie dominated the first set, 6-0.  After dropping the second set, 6-3, Pinos responded with a 6-4 win in the final set.  He is now 2-2 in dual matches.  Pinos' win gave SFU a 3-2 lead in the overall match.

In the match at No. 4, Miller met the Mountain Hawks' Wang.  However, the SFU sophomore fell 6-3, 6-4.

Garcia made his SFU singles debut, competing at No. 5 against Lehigh's Born.  The SFU junior dropped a 6-3, 6-0 decision.

At No. 6, Allender faced LU's Auteri.  The Red Flash junior fell 6-0, 6-4.  That point clinched the overall match for Lehigh.

"In singles, our top 3 performed well," said Castille. "The bottom half, we just need to be patient with them as they are gaining experience with each match. And they have to make sure not to get frustrated. It's a process and will take some time to figure out."

The Red Flash returns to action next weekend with matches against Carnegie Mellon and Dayton.  Saint Francis will battle Carnegie Mellon, ranked 10th in the ITA Division III Poll, on Saturday at 2 p.m.  SFU then meets Dayton on Sunday at 1 p.m.  Both matches will be played at The Club Sport and Health in Monroeville.
