Rising women's lacrosse junior
Chyler Espino (San Francisco, Calif.) participated in the World Lacrosse Festival on the inaugural Philippines team. Espino helped her squad to a 2-2 record on June 30-July 2 in San Diego, Calif.
Espino, a defender, helped her team allow 5.50 goals per game in the four games. The squad won its first-ever game against Sky Fire 7-2 on June 30. After splitting the second day with an 8-5 loss to San Diego Blue and a 13-5 victory against San Diego Red, the Philippines wrapped up its first-ever event with a 7-5 loss to San Diego Blue.
"I am extremely grateful to have gotten the opportunity to play with the inaugural Philippines women's team," said Espino. "Ever since I started playing lacrosse, I've always been one of the very few Asians on the team, and so playing with a bunch of people who look like me was special."
Thanks to the success at this tournament, the Philippines have been invited to play in the Super Sixes Tournament in Hong Kong on December 29-30. The hope is that the Philippines team can continue to grow and make its debut at the 2026 Women's Lacrosse World Cup.
"I was able to play with other college athletes and coaches, who taught me ways I can grow my game, and can apply to this coming season at Saint Francis," said Espino. "I know this experience was just the beginning, and I'm so excited to continue representing the Philippines."
Espino, an All-Northeast Conference first-team performer, ranked second on the team in ground balls (36) and draw controls (51) and third in caused turnovers (18) in her sophomore campaign. Espino grabbed a career-high 10 draw controls against St. Bonaventure on April 19 and had had four matches with at least three draws. She also registered at least three ground balls seven times including two games with five ground balls and a season-high four caused turnovers against Merrimack on April 8. Espino ranked fifth in the league in ground balls per game (2.54).
