Two Runners Enter SFU Record Books, Other Strong Performances At Nittany Lion Challenge

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW 
>>Saint Francis indoor track and field teams returned to action after a month break at the Nittany Lion Challenge hosted by Penn State University on Saturday.

>>46 athletes, 23 from the men's and women's team, competed at University Park, PA.

>>The best finish from both teams came from Caleb Nelson, who finished fourth in the long jump with a mark of 14.08m. The junior finished first in the event at the Nittany Lion Challenge during the 2022-23 indoor season.

FLASH WOMEN NUGGETS
The women's team had one top-10 performance and four others that finished top-15 in their events.

The field events saw Marlene Jacobs finish eighth in pole vault with a clearance of 3.48m. Brooke Long took 12th in the long jump with a mark of 5.08m. To round it out, Carly Sedun took 15th in the weight throw with a mark of 13.68m.

In the track events, Rhoda Alaban-Tafon finished 11th in the 400m dash with a time of 58.79. Monica Gregg had a 12th place finish in the 1000m dash with a time of 3:04.01.

In the 600m dash, two runners made their way into the SFU history books. Sarah Colman is now second all-time after finishing 14th with a time of 1:38.81. Emma Fleck is fourth all-time after taking 22nd with a time of 1:40.85.

FLASH MEN NUGGETS 
After finishing first in long jump last season with a mark of 14.21m, Nelson finished just .13 away with his score this year. With one top-five performance, the men's team had one more top-10 placements and four others finish top-15.

In the field events, Trey Baney finished ninth in the weight throw with a score of 15.22m. He also finished 16th in shot put with a mark of 13.67m. The shot put event saw Nickolas and Dustin Hyde finish 11th and 12th with throws of 15.99 and 15.33m, respectively.

In the track events, Julian Saunders took 11th in the 60m dash preliminaries with a time of 6.97. In the 60m hurdle preliminaries, David Niang came in 12th with a time of 8.45.

UP NEXT
Indoor track and field will compete at the Gulden Invitational hosted by Bucknell University Saturday, January 20.
