LORETTO, Pa. (Oct. 3, 2010) – The Red Flash women's soccer team became the quickest in program history to earn eight wins on Sunday – doing so in 12 games – as Saint Francis downed Mount St. Mary's 6-1 at the Stokes Soccer Complex. The distinction had previously belonged to the 2005 squad who accomplished the feat in 13 matches.
With the victory, SFU improved to 8-3-1 on the season, with a 2-1-0 mark in Northeast Conference play. Mount St. Mary's fell to 3-6-5 and 0-2-1 in the NEC.
Sophomore Tesa McKibben (Cogan Station, Pa./Montoursville) (Cogan Station, Pa./Montoursville) and senior midfielder Haleigh Dunyon (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson)(Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson) each scored two goals in pacing the Red Flash offense, which looked unstoppable at times in racking up 24 shots to The Mount's five.
Saint Francis struck quickly in the contest with Dunyon netting her sixth goal of the year just over five minutes in. McKibben and freshman Stephanie Boulter (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) were credited with assists on the tally.
The slim one-goal margin stood for nearly 30 minutes before Boulter delivered a perfect feed to freshman Melissa Lookingland (Fallston, Md./John Carroll) (Fallston, Md./John Carroll) – who was streaking toward the net –to put the Flash up 2-0 with 10 minutes to go in the first half.
SFU would need to wait less than five minutes for its next score, this one rifled just inside the top right corner of the goal by freshman Codi Bixler (Topton, Pa./Brandywine Heights) (Topton, Pa./Brandywine Heights) from about 20 yards out. Senior Chelsea Traurig (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) tapped the ball to Bixler to garner her second assist of the season.
In the second half, McKibben scored her first goal of the game as she dribbled through traffic to fire a shot from five yards out in the 62nd minute. McKibben assisted on Dunyon's second goal of the game just 10 minutes later.
Already on top 5-1, McKibben notched her sixth point of the match on her ninth goal of the season in the 79th minute of play on a well-struck shot that deflected into the net from off of the right goal post.
Sarah Malpezzi registered the Mountaineers' lone score in the 75th minute.
SFU goalkeeper Lauren Fearer (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant Area) earned the win by making three saves in nearly 60 minutes of shutout-work before being spelled by Brianna Butcher (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow), who closed out the game.
SFU's six goals marked the most the Flash have ever scored in an NEC contest and the five-goal margin of victory tied for SFU's largest ever against league competition.
The Red Flash return to action on Sunday, Oct. 10 when they travel to Bryant for a 1 p.m. match.
