BOX SCORE Flash Points:
  • SFU Women's Tennis fell 7-0 at St. John's on Friday night in Queens.
  • The Red Flash is now 1-9 overall, while the Red Storm improved to 10-3.
  • Saint Francis takes on St. Francis Brooklyn on Sunday at 9 a.m. in its season opener.

QUEENS, N.Y. – The Saint Francis Women's Tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision against St. John's on Friday at the National Tennis Center.  The Red Flash is 1-9 overall, while St. John's improved to 10-3 on the year.

At No. 1 doubles, sophomore Laura Gutierrez (Bogota, Colombia/Cibercolegio UCN) and freshman Nastasia Tamarkin (Washington, D.C./School Without Walls) fell 6-4 against SJU's Jessica Livianu and Zofia Stanisz.  In a tight match at No. 2, junior Raksha Bode (Reunion, Fla./Florida Virtual School) and sophomore Lucia Seigford (Madrid, Spain/Mirasur) fell 7-5 against St. John's Irina Preotescu and Olaya Inclan Solis.

"I was very pleased with how we came out and played in doubles," said Head Coach Rob Castille. "We put ourselves in a great position to win both of the doubles, but we didn't take advantage of our opportunities. The girls learned that against a team as good as St. John's, if you give them a chance to get back in it, they'll take advantage."

The Red Storm won the match at No. 3 doubles by default due to no SFU player available.

In the match at No. 1, Seigford took on the Red Storm's Livianu, but dropped a 6-0, 6-1 result.  Gutierrez met St. John's Solis at No. 2.  The Red Flash sophomore took the first set, 6-4, but Solis won the next set, 6-2. In the deciding set, Solis came out on top, 6-0.

Bode faced SJU's Stanisz at No. 3, but fell 7-5, 7-5.  Tamarkin competed at No. 4, falling 6-4, 7-5 against SJU's Jaide Collins.

At No. 5, junior Stephanie Miller (Washington, D.C./St. John's College High School) met Nina Marjanovic.  The SFU junior dropped the first set, 6-4, but bounced back to win the second set, 6-3.  In the super-tiebreaker final set, Marjanovic won 10-2.

"In singles, I felt several matches could have gone eight way," said Castille. "I attribute that to the way we competed. St. John's is a very talented, deep team, and our girls fought hard and played some smart tennis tonight. I think we can take a lot of positives from this and apply them to our first conference match on Sunday."

St. John's won the match at No. 6 singles by default due to no SFU player available.

The Red Flash will take on St. Francis Brooklyn on Sunday in its NEC opener.  The match is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.  The Terriers 1-8 this season, including an 0-2 mark in the NEC.
