WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Saint Francis men's tennis team improved to 3-0 this spring with a 7-0 win at Howard on Saturday. The Red Flash swept the doubles and singles matches, dropping only one set in singles.
"I was pleased overall with how the guys competed today," said Head Coach
Rob Castille. "We talked about being professional and really staying focused and playing hard from the first point to the last."
At the top doubles position, junior
Alec Dylan Foo-Kune (Phoenix, Mauritius/International Connections Academy (Md.)) and senior
Rodrigo Tico (Guadalajara, Mexico/Colegio de Bachilleres) combined for a 6-3 victory against Howard's William Jones III and Ismael Kaouache. The Red Flash duo improved to 2-1 this spring.
Senior
Plamen Avuski (Plovdiv, Bulgaria /Math High School ) and sophomore
Jan Vit Suntar (Cerklje na Gorenjskem, Slovenia/Gimnazija Kranj) paired up for a 6-1 win at No. 2 against the Bison's Laguna Foster and Cole Gittens. The SFU pair is now 1-1.
The third doubles match featured SFU freshman
Franz Luna (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Laurel Springs) and sophomore
Robin van der Heijden (Burgh Haamstede, Netherlands/Scheldmond College) in a battle against HU's Sager Ragu and Karim Shokeir. The SFU duo improved to 2-1 on the season with a 6-3 victory.
"We got off to a good start by sweeping the doubles," said Castille. "We carried that momentum over into singles."
Foo-Kune competed at the top singles spot against Kaouache. After dropping the first set, 6-3, Foo-Kune bounced back to win the second set, 6-1. In the deciding set, Foo-Kune came out on top, 6-3, to improve to 2-1 this spring.
In the match at No. 2, Luna met Jones III. The Red Flash rookie dominated the first set, winning 6-0. He then earned a 6-4 victory in the second set for a straight-set win. He is now 10-3 overall and 3-0 this spring.
Tico took on Shokeir at No. 3 singles. The SFU senior claimed the first set, 6-3. He clinched a sweep with a 6-2 second set win to move to 2-1 this spring.
Suntar faced Howard's Foster at the No. 4 position. The Saint Francis sophomore took a tight opening set, 7-5. He then won the next set, 6-3, to clinch a straight-set win. Suntar improved to 8-2 overall and 3-0.
In the match at No. 5, senior
Eli Cerdan (Bloomfield, N.J. /Saint Mary High School) competed against the Bison's Spencer Kelly. The SFU senior earned a 6-3 victory in the first set. He repeated that performance in the second set for a straight-set victory. He is now 6-4 overall.
At No. 6, van der Heijden met Howard's Gittens. The Red Flash sophomore took the first set, 6-1. He then claimed the second set, 6-4, for the sweep. That was van der Heijden's first win of the spring.
"We'll get some rest to get ready for a very tough match tomorrow against Navy," said Castille.
The Red Flash travels to Annapolis, Md. on Sunday for a 2:30 p.m. match against Navy. The Midshipmen will be making their spring debut.
