Women's Tennis Suffers 7-0 Setback At James Madison

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Saint Francis Women's Tennis team suffered a 7-0 setback at James Madison on Sunday.  The Red Flash dropped to 0-2 on its opening weekend and will look to bounce back next Sunday, January 28, in its home opener against Wright State at The Club Sport and Health in Monroeville.
 
At the top doubles spot, sophomore Laura Gutierrez (Bogota, Colombia/Cibercolegio UCN) and freshman Nastasia Tamarkin (Washington, D.C./School Without Walls) battled JMU's Kimmy Herrock and Elizabeth Norman.  The Red Flash duo fell 6-3 and is now 6-4 this season.
 
In the match at No. 2, junior Stephanie Miller (Washington, D.C./St. John's College High School) and sophomore Lucia Seigford (Madrid, Spain/Mirasur) met the Dukes' Diane Flament and Dylan Owens.  The SFU pair dropped a 6-2 decision. 
 
James Madison won the match at No. 3 by default due to no SFU player available.
 
Seigford took on James Madison's Jona Roka at No. 1 singles.  The SFU sophomore dropped a 6-2, 6-4 result.  At No. 2, Gutierrez faced JMU's Norman.  The Red Flash sophomore fell 6-0, 7-5.
 
Junior Raksha Bode (Reunion, Fla./Florida Virtual School) met the Dukes' Anna Makarova at No. 3.  However, Bode fell 6-3, 6-0.  In the match at No. 4, Miller competed against JMU's Emma Petersen, but dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision.
 
At No. 5, Tamarkin took on James Madison's Michaela Kluska.  After dropping the first set, 6-1, Tamarkin responded by winning the next set, 6-2.  In a tight super-tiebreaker set, Tamarkin fell 10-7.
 
James Madison won the match at No. 6 by default due to no SFU player available.

"James Madison is a strong team and well-coached," said Head Coach Rob Castille. "I know the results don't show it, but I was pleased with how we competed today. I felt like we improved in some areas compared with our first match against Navy. We will continue to work on some things this next week and look to apply those in our match against Wright State next weekend."

2. Norman(JMU) def. Gutierrez(SFU), 6-0, 7-5.
3. Makarova(JMU) def. Bode(SFU), 6-3, 6-0.
4. Petersen(JMU) def. Miller(SFU), 6-2, 6-2.
5. Kluska(JMU) def. Tamarkin(SFU), 6-1, 2-6, 10-7.
6. Herrock(JMU) wins by default.
