CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Saint Francis swimming team finished in fourth place at the 2017 NEC Swimming Championships. On the final day of the competition, SFU had three swimmers place in the top five of their events. The championships were held at the Zesiger Center on the MIT Campus.
The Red Flash, led by Head Coach
Rory Coleman, finished the weekend with 405.5 team points, edging out LIU Brooklyn (404) for fourth. Central Connecticut State won the NEC Championship with 869.5 points, followed by Bryant (605) and Wagner (578.5). After LIU Brooklyn were Sacred Heart (214.5), Mount St. Mary's (204) and St. Francis Brooklyn (187).
The final day started with the 1,650-yard Freestyle, junior
Emma Karell (Norrtälje, Sweden/Täby Swim Club) finished fifth, with a time of 17:36.67.
Freshman
Emily Graziano (Jeannette, Pa./Penn Trafford) placed 12th, with a time of 17:58.69, while senior
Paige McLean (Bolton, Ontario/St. Michael Catholic Secondary) came in 13th, with a time of 18:06.32. Junior
Kasey Marks (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman) touched the wall in 18:07.56 to place 14th, while sophomore
Fallon Nelson (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant) was 17th, with a pace of 18:17.17.
In the 200-yard Backstroke, freshmen
Karilyn Quon (Tempe, Ariz./Corona del Sol) and
Aimee Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) both qualified for the "A" final. Quon recorded a time of 2:03.39 to place fourth in the event. Baur was seventh, with a time of 2:06.24. Quon's time is now the third-best in program history in the 200-yard Backstroke and Baur's is the fifth-best time in school history.
Sophomore
Marisa Daly (Wallingford, Conn./Mark T. Sheehan) posted a time of 2:08.74 for a 16th place finish in the 200-yard Backstroke. Sophomore
Kristin Fisher (Lakevilla, Conn./Housatonic Valley Regional) came in 22nd with a time of 2:10.63.
Junior
Katie Lafferty (Bremen, Ind./Bremen) competed in the "A" final of the 100-yard Freestyle. She touched the wall in 51.15 for a fourth-place finish.
Junior
Natalie Tedjasukmana (Anaheim, Calif./Mater Dei) earned a 12th place finish in the 100-yard Freestyle, with a time of 52.53, which tied for the seventh-best time in program history in that event. Junior
Alicia Tiberino (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) placed 16th with a pace of 53.22, while sophomore
Amanda Crnic (Conway, Ark./Conway) came in 21st with a time of 55.09.
In the 200-yard Breaststroke, freshman
Erin O'Neill (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) was SFU's top finisher, with a time of 2:21.47 to place seventh. That is the fifth-best time in program history in that event.
Sophomore
Jessica Crumm (New Hampton, N.Y./Minisink Valley) finished in 13th place with a time of 2:23.36, while freshman
Laura Patrick (Lake Charles, La./St. Louis Catholic) placed 20th, with a pace of 2:27.19. Freshman
Kristen Toth (Silver Spring, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) came in 22nd with a time of 2:29.77. Crumm's time is the sixth-best time in school history in the 200-yard Breaststroke.
In the 200-yard Butterfly, junior
Emma Karell (Norrtälje, Sweden/Täby Swim Club) recorded a time of 2:07.92 for a seventh-place finish. With that performance, Karell now owns the fourth-best time in program history in that event.
Sophomore
Rory O'Dell (Chapel Hill, N.C./Northwood) finished 14th in the 200-yard Butterfly, with a time of 2:12.73, and freshman
Meaghan Saettel (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg) placed 17th, with a pace of 2:13.26.
Quon, Bowman, Tedjasukmana and Lafferty combined in the 400-yard Freestyle Relay for a time of 3:27.53 to finish fourth. That is the second-best time in program history in that event.
The group of Narduzzi, Fisher, Toth and Crnic teamed up for a time of 3:44.60 in the 400-yard Freestyle Relay.
On the weekend, Quon earned two Top Three finishes, placing third in the 500-yard Freestyle (4:58.75) and 400-yard IM (4:24.95), setting a new school record in the 400-yard IM. Lafferty had a third-place finish in the 50-yard Freestyle (23.37) and Bowman finished second in the 100-yard Butterfly (56.13). The Red Flash also earned third-place finishes in the 200-yard Medley Relay and 800-yard Freestyle Relay.
