Saint Francis University Athletics Hall of Fame
Saint Francis men’s basketball coach Skip Hughes knew who to call on for instant offense during the 1960-61 and 1961-62 seasons. Cal Fowler led the Red Flash in scoring each of these years, averaging better than 19.0 points per game in back-to-back seasons. He averaged 16.8 points per game for his career, graduating from the College ranked fourth all-time in scoring with 1,179 points. That total now ranks 20th all-time in Red Flash history.
Mr. Fowler teamed up with Ed Winters in 1961-62 as the only backcourt combination in the country to feature two 1,000 point scorers. The Red Flash posted a final record of 14-8 that season and won nine of its final 11 games.
An outstanding shooter (career 48.1% from the field and 75.9% from the free throw line), Mr. Fowler also crashed the boards from his guard position, leading the Red Flash in rebounding as a junior, averaging 8.5 rebounds. In fact, he led his team in seven statistical categories during the 1960-61 season. Mr. Fowler is one of only eight Red Flash players to score more than 500 points in a single season, tallying 513 markers in the 1960-61 campaign.
Saint Francis College is proud to honor Calvin “Cal” Fowler with induction into the Athletics Hall of Fame on this date, Friday, July 30, 1999.
