Jim McClellan holds a valued place in the annals of Saint Francis’ rich basketball history at the time of its greatest success.

McClellan played a key role when Saint Francis defeated Duquesne University when the Dukes were the top-ranked team in the nation.  He followed that win with superb performances against St. Joseph’s and Villanova on the road and was named by the city’s press as the top visiting player in Philadelphia one year.

Far from a leaper, he knew how to get position and box out taller opponents and act the intimidator role. He generally took on the opposition’s best big man choosing to go after him right away.

Appearing on two of the school’s NIT teams, he was later drafted by the NBA’s Cincinnati Royals, much like his idol and former Saint Francis standout Maurice Stokes had been.
