Saint Francis University Athletics Hall of Fame
When you talk about wrestling at Saint Francis College, the conversation starts with Tom Vaux. The native of central Pennsylvania started the Red Flash wrestling program in 1961 and coached the sport until it was discontinued at the College in 1975. During his 14-year tenure, he led his team to an overall record of 101-59-4; four First Colonies titles and two West Penn crowns Mr. Vaux also helped create the 23-team Catholic National Wrestling Tournament. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, he taught physical education and coordinated intramural activities at the College.
Mr. Vaux subsequently took over the wrestling program at Central Cambria High School in nearby Ebensburg, and coached his teams there to a 199-113-4 record over 20 seasons, before retiring in 1997. In 1978, he served as a coach for the U.S. Junior World Team which posted a 6-0 record in Turkey and Iran. He was inducted into the Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1998.
Before he was an outstanding coach, Mr. Vaux was a standout wrestler. A 1960 graduate of Lock Haven State College, Mr. Vaux was undefeated on the mats for two straight seasons for the Eagles. He also enjoyed a very successful scholastic wrestling career at Phillipsburg High School.
Saint Francis College is proud to honor Tom Vaux with induction into the Athletics Hall of Fame on this date, Friday, July 30, 1999.
