In one of the finest all-around performances in school history, Phelan set the DeGol Arena record with 42 points against an arch-rival Duquesne team led by the great Norm Nixon. He was equally dominate in games against West Virginia, UNC-Charlotte (in its NCAA Final Four year), Georgetown, and Georgia Tech.
Not limited to scoring, it was not unusual to find him the team leader in all categories to include scoring, rebounding assists and steals when the final tallies were taken. He ranks seventh in program history in career assists, eighth in career field goal pct. and led the team in scoring in 1975-76 at 13.1 ppg. Phelan won the J. Irving Whalley Award, was named to the ECAC Division I All-Star Weekly honor roll twice during his senior season, served as co-captain for the 1976-77 squad, and was drafted by the San Francisco Warriors in the 1977 NBA Draft.
To speak to his athleticism, he was signed as a free agent by the Pittsburgh Steelers after his senior year. He later served as an assistant coach for St. Francis and was head basketball coach of Hartford University.
