Father Bede Hines is truly a Renaissance Man.
He graduated from Saint Francis College in 1943, was ordained a Franciscan priest in 194,and continued his education pursuit in the field of English, receiving a master’s degree from the Pennsylvania State University in 1951 and a master of literary education degree from Columbia University in 1953. He also holds a Ph.D. in English Letters from the University of Montreal. He is the author of several books.
He has touched the lives of countless Saint Francis College students through his diverse roles as professor of English, directory of intramurals, residence hall director, and cross country and track and field coach. One of his former runners, Johnstown native Steve Molnar, is a nationally – recognized marathoner.
A firm believer of a “healthy mind in a healthy body, ” Father Bede continues to compete in running and swimming events at the Pennsylvania Senior Games, where he has won numerous medals, and in local running competitions.
Saint Francis College is proud to honor Father Bede Hines, T.O.R. with induction into the Athletics Hall of Fame on this date, Saturday, November 16, 1996.
