Saint Francis University Athletics Hall of Fame
Ted Helsel could always go the distance.
As a four-year member of the Red Flash football team from 1976-1979, Helsel set the standard for running backs .His 337-yard rushing performance against Gallaudet on November 3, 1979, is not only a College single-game record but is the eighth best in NCAA Division III history. He is the only running back in Saint Francis College history to gain more than 1,000 yards rushing in a single season, and is the all-time rushing leader with 2,015 years.
These numbers don’t begin to tell the whole story. All told, he rushed for more than 3,600 yards in his college career, but his freshman and sophomore rushing records are not recognized by the NCAA because Saint Francis competed on the club level at the time. Even though he played in only 17 games against NCAA Division III opponents, he is still the holder of the number of Red Flash single-game, single-season and career records.
Saint Francis College is proud to honor Ted Helsel with induction into the Athletics Hall of Fame on this date, Saturday, November 16, 1996.
