Saint Francis University Athletics Hall of Fame
Father Jonas McCarthy forged a bond with the Saint Francis College football program that will never be broken.
A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Father Jonas was graduated with a degree in civil engineer prior to his ordination to the priesthood in 1970. His engineering skills were called into practice for a number of campus renovations, and he also served the College community as a lecturer in economics, chaplain of the basketball team, and moderator of the hockey team. He earned the respect and friendship of local residents through his tenure as a Loretto Borough Council member.
He served as an assistant football coach under Art Martynuska for eight years before his death in 1979. His name is spoken with reverence by former student- athletes, coaches and friends who came in contact with him on a daily basis. In 1991, Saint Francis College announced the Father Jonas McCarthy Award, which is presented annually to the senior football player who demonstrates leadership, sportsmanship and athletic ability.
Saint Francis College is proud to honor Rev. Jonas McCarthy, T.O.R. with induction into the Athletics Hall of Fame on this date, Saturday, November 16, 1996.
